Creatively Develop Your Top Talent

The competitive playing field is often level—except for your human capital. Treat it as your most precious resource and your investment will multiply far beyond your dreams. Take time from your everyday challenges to focus on developing the talent in your organization. Keep your high potentials motivated by exploring where and how they would like to grow, in ways that can dramatically influence your outcomes.

“The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.” —Henry Kissinger

Mine for gems. Go on a treasure hunt for high potential talent. Spend time with not only your direct reports but also with those in their organizations. Be visible, talk with people, pay attention to those shining stars in all areas. Say thank you often. Ask lots of questions and listen to what they have to say. You’ll find many ideas that may surprise you. Set goals for your direct reports to uncover hidden gems and to polish them to a sparkle.

Add these three strategies to your development arsenal.
